Don't be boring. Choose a story idea that is interesting for the people your escape room is meant for.
Keep the story simple...not too many characters.

What is the point of your escape room? Is it to solve a quest? Is it to escape a room? Is it to escape a situation? Is it to test people's knowledge on a particular subject area?
There are all types of digital clues and locks you can use in your Escape Room project.
The more locks you have, the more complex the game gets. Be careful because this can mean that people get frustrated because it's too hard.
If you have too few locks or make the game too easy then people get bored.
So, just like Goldilocks, you're aiming to get your game 'Just Right'.
This means testing your design and getting feedback until the feedback is.....
A timer puts a sense of urgency on the game and can add to the excitement levels. Be realistic about how much time you give to people.
