It is worth spending time exploring the ins and outs of how Chromebooks work. This makes future projects go more smoothly and supports learners to work more independently with their devices.
LOOKING AFTER THE CHROMEBOOK:
This video is a useful reminder to chromebook users of how they should treat the devices so that they can be used as long as possible. Watch this video and then create an agreement of how Chromebooks will be looked after in your class.
Who is responsible for their storage? for them being charged? What are the systems? Where and when is it ok to use the devices? Where and when is it not? What protocols are there? eg. signing out of devices at the end of use etc
BASIC NAVIGATION:
This video starts with the basics of using a Chromebook but even seasoned users might discover something new. Watch the video together and then give time for your learners to explore basic navigation.
Please note that with newer Chromebooks the launchpad pops up in the bottom right corner.
KNOW THE KEYBOARD:
Chromebook users should understand what all of the keys on the top row of the keyboard do. Watch the video and then give time for your learners to explore the keyboard functions.
TOUCHPAD TIPS
Some young people can find the touch pad challenging to get the hang of. If it is a real issue, then it may be worth investing in a mouse instead. Most learners get the hang of it over time and benefit from tips such as those in the video below:
One way to practise your touchpad skills is to create some art. Google Canvas should come as one of your pre-installed apps. The instructions below show how to access Google Canvas. If you open the launchpad and can't find Google Canvas, try typing into the search bar.
ORGANISING APPS
Watch the video below for useful information on how to organise apps that are used regularly so that they can be found quickly and easily. Get your learners to organise their apps so that they are ready to launch when they sign in to their Chromebook.
TAKING A PHOTO OR VIDEO
Watch this video and practise taking a photo or recording a video.
Letter recognition and typing skills on a keyboard are important. There are many typing practice programs available and it is good to build this in as one of your literacy activities. Of course, voice typing is an option for those whom the typing process is a barrier.
